Arma Hobby 1/72 Sea Hurricane Mark Ib

June 2, 2023 · in Aviation · · 27 · 418

This was a review build for the IPMS USA site, so only included a few pics here. You can see the build review here: https://reviews.ipmsusa.org/review/sea-hurrican-mk-ib

I am really impressed with these kits. I just scored another for a review build - a P-39N - that I'll be starting next week. The only thing I did extra was add rivets. Lots of goodies in the box, especially for the "sea" conversion. I also picked up another from them.

This looks amazing, Greg. Arma Hobby kits are very impressive, I don't do much in 1/72, but I want the FM-2 and P-39N just because the kits look so good in box.

Your display is very dramatic, the Sea Hurricane looks very authentic.

  2. Greg, great job on your Arma Hurricane, it looks great! I still love all of my old Hurricane kits but Arma really hit the ball out of the park.

  3. The Arma Hurricanes are definitely the best in 1/72. You really hit a home run with this one.

  4. Great work, Greg (@gkittinger). I don't do a lot of 1/72, but these Arma kits are hard to pass up. They are really detailed, go together well, and have most everything you need already in the kit. I have several of the Hurricanes sleeping in my garage. Very nice work on the paint.

  5. Certainly one to be proud of, Greg… you did well.

  6. Looks just real.

  7. Excellent Sea Hurricane build.

Agreed with the Arma kits. I've completed two of them and working on one right now. They've all gone together really well. Didn't think much about the hype when they first came out, but they are fun kits to build with just enough detail to look good, but not enough to drag out the build.

  8. A honey of a Hurricane Greg. Another great build, I still love your stands.

  9. A wonderful Hurricane, Greg! The Arma Hobby kit is great and yiu made the most of it!

  10. This Hurricane is an absolute gem, Greg @gkittinger
You are really doing great things on 1/72 scale.

  11. Just superb Greg. Lovely build and finish 👍

  12. The paintjob is amazing, Greg @gkittinger, that worn look on the camouflage is just great! How did you do that - pre or rather post shading? Fantastic build, very inspiring!

    • @fxrob - I do a lot of things to try to get a "realistic" look (with some artistic license to trick the eye). I usually start with black-basing and then mottling within all the sections depicted by panel and rivet lines with white. Occasionally I'll then mottle within select panels with other colors to change the tone of the top color on those panels - for instance, yellow or orange beneath some camo colors on top, and browns or greys before a very light or white underside color. I think black basing - though it takes longer, gives you more flexibility and options than a simple panel line pre-shade process. Once I have top color down, I'll lighten it and spray again in the center of panels or between rivet lines, etc. I may lighten twice for this work. After panel line washes, clear coats and decals, I'll then further weather with pastel chalks, oils, AK weathering pencils, etc.)

  13. Very nice build Greg!

  14. Well done, Greg. Perfect paint and weathering.

  15. Great job, Greg. Love the paint work!

  16. She a beaut, Greg! Nice that your build will be featured on the IPMS site - well deserved - any of your builds would be justified.
This has to be an airbrush build - or is it brush?

  17. Lovely crisp, detailed work on this, Greg. You manage a ton of variation without losing an overall effect. The underside is stunning, and it's good to see one in flight. I assume no pilot is included; where did he come from?

  18. Excellent job on the weathering.

  19. Terrific detail work and well written review, Greg. I've been waiting forever for Arma to release their new Hurricane in 1/48th and finally it's ready to hit the shelves but I suppose it will take some time before the kits show up on this side of the pond.

This is an incredible build ! It's hard to beleive this is only 1/72 scale. I knew right away it was yours when I saw the clear rod stand... one of your trademarks. Like Eric Berg, I too am waiting for their 1/48 scale Hurricane. I definitely clicked on several of the buttons to compliment your fine work.

  21. Greg, this falls into the "super nice" category. I'm going to have to start picking some of these kits.

  22. great work greg looks very very good

  23. Looks fantastic Greg (@gkittinger). Great detailing. Very nice recreation.

Do you pre-shade the panel lines or cover the whole surface with say black and then marble back in with the top colour/s? I've seen both techniques used on various modeling videos. I have so far stuck to pre-shading the panel lines rather than doing a complete surface pre-shade.

I forget that the British Royal Navy had the Sea Hurricane as well as the Sea Fire.
