Tamiya, 1:48 scale, Heinkel He-162A-2, "Salamander"
Calling THIS one done!
This early jet had the distinction of killing more German pilots than those of the enemy.
A really nice little kit that was a lot of fun, and builds well. I know, some of you may be thinking, "What? A jet?" I know, I'm a little surprised at myself, building a model without any, "Spinny things" on it.
I used an aftermarket pitot tube and weapons. Why? I'm not really not sure, as the kit's parts were fine but they do look better. The kit's decals even behaved , and they're Tamiya!
Paint is Gunze Mr. Color, RLM 81/82/76.
Weathering was Flory washes, kept to a minimum, as the aircraft did not see much flight time.
Markings are those for Leutnant Gerhard Hanf, II Gruppe, JG 1, Leck Germany, May 1945.
Thanks for looking, Happy Saturday, and
"So many models, so little time..."
Excellent job, Frederick!
Indeed, so many models, so little time!
Ha! Thanks Spiros! That was my old ‘Tag Line’ when I used to go on Hyperscale. I have not been on that webpage in years.
Amazing result, Frederick @fjs3
Very nice to leave the engine covers open to reveal the details.
When I saw this aircraft in real, I was very impressed by it.

Thank you, John!
Nice work Freddie. Looks just like the 1:1 out at Planes of Fame.
Wunderschön!
Do you happen to know if the arrow on the nose of the aircraft served any purpose or was it just decoration?
Probably just decor, but who knows with these things as they were dangerous to fly.
Maybe a, “Fly plane this direction!” Warning? They all seem to have them.
That’s a good one 😂
@fjs3
C,mon, man, this was designed to be flown after 3 hours of "Flight Training 101". Hermann said zo.
Looking good.
coming up for Poughkeepsie? 🙂
Thanks Bill.
Probably not getting up there anytime soon. Maybe around the holidays or after the new year.
Nice work, Frederick! Aren’t we all playing “Beat the clock” trying to build our stashes? I know I am.
Oh yeah, I’m trying like heck. I probably won’t get that done, but I’m gonna try!
Another, Frederick Jewel and treat for the eyes. The real aircraft looks great but as stated it was a death trap. However, the comments about the model being nice, a lot of fun and builds well really sells. Another temptation for a modeler let loose in a hobby store. John said it well "Beat the clock" is so true. I thought it was a new rock group or movie but, at my age and with the stash being what it is I'd be at the bench 24/7.
Looking forward to seeing more of your gifts and talents Frederick.
Thank you Stephen for the kind words. I keep saying to the bride, “I’m gonna build all these models, or die trying!”
Time will tell.
A fine job on that Salamander. Another one I don't have yet - so many models, so little time left, time to pick and choose!
I rarely build jets, but this one, with the engine all displayed struck a note. It LOOKS like a dangerous aircraft to fly.
Excellent build of a dangerous (to the pilot) plane.
Thanks, Dan!
@fjs3 GORGEOUS simply gorgeous, beautiful Build!
Thank you, Cricket!
Nicely finished.
Thanks, John.
Frederick, Very nice work on this build. As you mentioned, this is a really fun kit to build, and makes for a really interesting piece on the ol' model shelf.
That it does. It’s odd looking. Thank you.
Your jet looks very good, Frederick, dangerous but cool.
Thanks, George!
Nice build - came out looking great.
Thanks Greg!
That's a super build Frederick. Seems like the odds of surviving a flight in one of those was severely short...
Thanks, Guy. It was said that it killed more Germans than enemy. Supposedly, it was used to shoot down a couple of Tempests in the closing days. I have not done any research to find out if that is accurate.
