Airfix 1/48th Fairey Gannet AS.4

January 8, 2024 · in Aviation · · 18 · 389

I pre-ordered this kit as soon as it was announced. A year went by and then it was released and I could barely wait to get to work on it. Well it now completed and the wait was well worth it. The latest kits continue to get ever better and this one is no exception.

I have completed mine as a Fairey AS.4 operated by 815 NAS operating off HMS Ark Royal which is one of the kit options. I have further decals and will be making at least another one. My preferred option will be a COD Version, which I hope Airfix will issue in the future. If not maybe can be done from this version, with a little work.

Highly recommende for those of us who like modelling aircraft.

  1. It’s good to see Airfix doing so well and this kit looks like it will be a best seller, well done for building it to such a high standard. I remember building the Frog 1/72 model back in the early 1960s, it hung from my bedroom ceiling for a while………

  2. Excellent job, Mark!

  3. Nice job, Mark...the detail on those folding wings looks incredible!

  4. Looks like a real winner- looking at it with the wings folded it's hard to believe it could ever fly! Like you I am really enjoying the "Airfix renaissance". They are making some really nice kits these days. Excellent result on your build

  5. Excellent model of a unique airplane.

  6. A beautiful build, Mark @markyp89
Nice work on the details as well as the paintwork.

  7. Looks great! The Gannet is such an unusual bird - you've captured it nicely.

  8. Excellent result, Mark. I just received mine courtesy of Santa and started some basic assembly. The kit is really beautiful but I’m not a fan of the harder plastic. I’m probably in the minority about that, but Airfix’ softer blue and even the gray plastic used in the Victor and 1/48 P-40 was much easier to work with.

  9. Green with envy. Mark your gifts and talents have brought out the best in this Airfix kit. I got to see one of the last airworthy Gannets take to the air. They started the bird with two starter cartridges (Huge shot gun shells) and two huge clouds of smoke and she came alive. It flew around the pattern for several times and the chief pilot described flying the aircraft like flying like a Grumman Avenger. I've been hooked on the Gannet ever since. Bravo on a excellent build with some strong painting and getting those wings to align in way that really is the signature pose of the Gannet.

  10. Being a collector of FAA I too pre ordered this beauty and have it in my stash I thought I would wait until a few goodies come out, you made a great job of this Marc , I wonder how many will build it with wings extended, not many I bet . What colours did you use ?

  11. That looks really good. I await the opportunity to get one over here.

  12. A splendid result on that Fairey Gannet. @markyp89

  13. Top marks for a super build Mark; it looks fantastic the way the folded wings sit. Top marks to Airfix too, for being willing & able to produce such as super range of kits.

  14. Outstanding build, congrats!

  15. Such an ugly yet beautiful looking aircraft, and you have done a marvelous job! Fantastic work.

  16. Thank you all for the kind comments.A big thank you to Airfix and the designer of this kit. To make that complex wing fold a relatively easy process to model is testament to the designers skills.
Just remember it does need all that indicated weight, she a fat girl!
