Douglas C-47 Dakota Airfix 1/72

February 25, 2024 · in Aviation · · 10 · 190

This is one of my first builds after restarting this hobby. I hadn't discovered wheatering-techniques during this build, so will have a look on that the next few months. The paratroopers () make it a bit more lively.

Living close to Market Gardens ‘Bridge Eleven' I've been reading about the rapid capture of this bridge. It's one of the most successful military operations during Operation Market Garden. Lieutenant John Thompson and his group (504th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the American 82nd Division) landed not far from the southern approach. The rest of his company had landed much further away. Thompson decided not to wait for them and immediately stormed the bridge. He achieved maximum surprise and captured the bridge undamaged. The bridge has borne his name since 2004.

  2. Superb Dakota, Harm @hptiggelaar
The paratroopers do indeed make it a lot more dynamic.
I do cross bridge eleven, just fifteen minutes away from my hometown, every day when I go to work in Nijmegen.

  3. Excellent job, Harm! I was lucky enough to visit John vd Biggelaar's @johnb Family last summer in The Netherlands and guess what, we stayed near the Market Garden Memorial, in Europarcs de Kraaijenbergse Plassen!

    • So much historic ground in this area of The Netherlands. I’ve only been living here for a bit more than a year, so there is so much to see and explore. Also the War Museum in Overloon. Highly recommended. 👍🏻

  4. That’s a great looking Dakota !

  5. Nice Dakota, what a great name that is.

  6. Very nice! Love the old workhorse.
