Tamiya 1/48 P-51B Mustang

March 22, 2024 · in Aviation · · 17 · 331

Hot off the bench is the classic P-51B that still represents a very nice model. However, I am looking forward to seeing 's' new P-51B release so as to make a comparison between the two. Typical Tamiya, parts fit and the only issues or mistakes I had were self inflected. I did add an Ultracast seat, some Barracuda wheels, they are very nice I may add, a Yahu IP, and a Squadron Malcolm Hood. The kit supplied Malcolm Hood is designed to be displayed in the closed position, I wanted it open.

The 75 gallon tanks are from the spares box and I attempted to add the plumbing, not totally correct but good enough for me. Paints were Tamiya Neutral Grey, Model Master Olive Drab enamel and the top coat is Alclad semi-matt. Decals were Super Scale 48-486 and represents Hoo Flung Dung/City of Paris as flown by Major R.C. McWherter of the 363rd Fighter Group. Building her was was trying at times, old age doesn't help, but all in all she was fun to build.

  1. Great B mod Mustang, Tom. I've always been a fan of the B/C and earlier Allison powered P-51s. You did a beautiful job on the Tamiya kit. I too, can't wait to see how Eduard handles this subject. Hopefully they get the wheel well shape correct, and it would be nice if they puttied the wing panels, but I doubt they'll do that. Either way, I'm sure it will be a great kit. 👍

  2. Nice P-51, Tom.

  3. Turned out great, Tom, I’m with you on the old age handicap.

  4. Nice work, Tom @tom-bebout. I like the early model Mustangs better than the later D models. Yours turned out looking good. The Ultracast seat looks great in the cockpit.

  5. Excellent Mustang, Tom!

  6. You did an amazing job on this Mustang, Tom @tom-bebout
The plumbing on the fuel tanks turned out great.

  7. The early Mustangs have always been one of my favorite variants that flew in WWII. You have really built a real nice model of the "B". The extra work makes a good kit even better. Well done. thanks for sharing

  8. A beautifully cleanly built model. I like it very much.

  9. G’day Tom (@tom-bebout),
A very nice build of a classic.
I have a couple in the stash that will get built one day. I think I may have a saquadron canopy, too.
I’m add my vote for the early Mustangs over the bubble tops.
    Liked!
