Arado Ar196 A-3 Suda Bay Crete 1943 Airfix ,1/72

May 18, 2024 · in Aviation · · 11 · 158

Well after a long Hiatus from posting anything I have managed to get some pictures together and will be posting a few builds over the next couple of days , I hope you like them. I am finding myself drawn to the nostalgia of the kits I built as a boy only this time around with a bit more skill...well I think so anyway haha !

I always loved the way this aircraft looks , it reminds me of something from a TinTin book.

The kit goes together really well although there is no interior to speak of which is why I added the crew figures. I love the really retro clear stand that came with the kit, that really takes me back to 1976 !

The aircraft was based in Suda bay Crete (briefly) and I am lucky enough to be holidaying in Crete in July and will try and get to Suda bay if I can, Greece is a beautiful country.

  1. Beautiful result on this Arado, Neil @neil-foster
It would be wonderful if you are able to visit Suda bay.
Crete is a wonderful island of Greece, I have been there 10 years ago and I loved it. I was not aware of Suda bay at that time, unfortunately.

  2. Thanks John , these ancient kits are a bit sparce on detail but I don't want to add to much just try and build them as Airfix intended back in the day

  3. What a fantastic result on this classic kit, Neil! Great you'll be in Crete this summer also!

  4. Great looking build, Neil @neil-foster. Wasn’t the plane used in the tintin comics with the giant mushrooms?

  5. Ha ha ! I thought I imagined it, so maybe it was, although it is a super basic kit with not much surface detail it still looks good when done.

  6. Nicely done Neil, it does look good for an oldie.

  7. Looks great, Neil. That was another kit that had amazing box art back in the day.

  8. Cheers John, it was probably Roy Cross artwork.

  9. I've built one of these, and have another in the stash - I also like the aircraft, and the kit, though simple, is nice! Yours looks great!
