Airfix 1/72 Spitfire Mk.Ia

February 15, 2025 · in Aviation · · 12 · 150

This is a 1983 build of 's Mk.I that was first released in 1978, kit No. 01065-0. I remember this as a very nice kit that falls together quite nicely and it looks pretty accurate.

This is a straight out of the box build, hand brushed acrylic Poly-S paint and I used the kit's decals. The streaks were made by using oil pastels. Recently I gave this a good cleaning by spraying some soapy water, I did a little rubbing with a cotton swab to remove some stubborn dirt and rinsed it with tap water from a spray bottle. After it was dry I highlighted the flight controls and some panel lines with a black mechanical pencil.

This is really a nice kit if you have one in your stash, build it and have fun with it. It is a quick build.

The pilot of this aircraft P.O Richard Hardy crash-landed in France during the Battle of Britain after receiving flack damage on his Spitfire. There he was captured and spent the rest of the war as a P.O.W. After the war he owned a pub and never talked about his time as a POW. Hardy passed away in September 1997.

  1. Very nice Spitfire, Bob! Love that ot is hand painted!

    • Thank you Spiros @fiveten! A lot of my builds are hand painted. Most of my silver/aluminum and one colored models are either airbrushed or I used the rattle can on them. Back then I think I did a better job using the brush compared to now.

  2. Wonderful result, Bob @v1pro
Amazing skills in hand painting for sure.

  3. Awesome build!

  4. Great looking Spitfire , Bob @v1pro , the hand painted camouflage looks good. Way back in the 70s & 80s, Polly S was the paints I used in my airbrush.

  5. A lovely little Spit, Bob!
