IL2 'Sturmovik'
Hello again, and back with something you don't see built too often these days:
First time I've built an IL2 and first time I've finished an AM kit. Engineering is superb IMO, as long as you take the time to read how other folks built theirs AND test fit... especially around the wing-to-fuselage assemblies.
All the paint tones are mixed using my favourite (un)reliable Mk.I eyeball method using Humbrol, Xtracolour and Tamiya enamels. I bought a sheet of 'Authentic Decals' but they shattered into molecule sized fragments as soon as they hit the water so I used Eduard 'stars' and the kit supplied bort numbers / guards badge.
Not too much else to add, if anyone wants to ask any questions, make any comments or rain-down any abuse, that's all fine. Have the rest of a great week...
All the best from NZ.
Ian.
Nicely done Ian, as you stated you don't see many of these completed, even at model shows. Glad to hear it went together well as I have one in the stash.
Great looking build and paint work!
Very nicely done, Ian. I'll be posting mine in a few days, but it won't look as good as yours!
A beautiful build, Ian...but - IMO, an ugly airplane (I just had to say it). 🙂
Your Mk.1 eyeballs are spot on, looks great !
Nice work.
For anyone contemplating this model, the one thing to do that will make everything work is to attach the upper wing part to its fuselage half before further assembly. This allows you to work the joint from inside and out, and get it nice and tight, which leads to all the good fit down the line.
I think it was your article I was using as reference, Tom... in the end it simply 'clicked together' so I didn't question it and simply poured the glue on !
Terrific work on the Sturmovik, Ian. As an old pilot, I don't think any plane is ugly, but it is certainly utilitarian. Never underestimate the power of a Mark 1 eyeball. I am a big believer in TLAR (That Looks About Right).
I’ve got one of those ready for paint, I’ll use yours for inspiration ! You’ve done an excellent job on it. I just need to buy a new compressor and possibly an airbrush.
The flying tank turned out very nice... I'm also in the school that no plane is ugly, it's just that some are better looking than others...
These AM kits are fantastic right out of the box.
Well done !
Excellent Sturmovik! Paint and weathering look spot-on. Well done.
Superb finish! This is one purposefully looking aircraft...
Amazing job, Ian!
