1/35 Centurion Mk. IIIKorean War Group Build.

November 29, 2022 · in Armor · · 26 · 1.1K

This is the 1971 kit built as “Caughoo” of the 8th King's Irish Hussars in Korea, 1950. “Caughoo” is notable for destroying a Cromwell that had been previously captured by the North Koreans. I replaced the kit's awful smoke dischargers with plastic tubing and fabricated the tarps and rolls from tissue paper and white glue. I remember those Shep Paine tip flyers in Monogram kits way back when…..

British tanks in Korea were still painted in WW2 SCC 15 Olive Drab. I used some Xtracolor faded OD41 for this. Bronze Green was a later color used in Europe. The decals are from Star. I finished it up with the usual washes, dry brushing, and pastels.

The kit's commander figure had a weird look so I omitted him. I may or may not find a suitable figure at a later date.

These old Tamiya tank kits still pack a lot of modeling fun for a more then fair price. Happy modeling!

  1. Nicely done John!

  2. Very nice result, John @j-healy
You did some excellent work on the tarps and rolls, hard to believe this is just tissue paper.

  3. A superb result, my friend @j-healy! The old Tamiya kit never looked better!

  4. Great job, John. I like the tarps, very realistic. Like mediocre figures, stowage can be a deterrent to the overall look but yours adds a nice "touch".

  5. Well done, John (@j-healy). My dad was a tank company commander in the Army in WW2, so tanks always have a spot in my heart. I really like the tarps, they came out very realistically.

  6. The Centurion is my favourite tank and this a terrific example, just shows what can be done with these old Tamiya kits.

  7. Great Job John @j-healy.
That old Tamiya Kit holds up pretty well for over 50 years!

  8. @j-healy, That is a fine tank model John! Very nice work indeed sir. 👍 Your "tarp" work looks really good; I've been struggling a bit lately getting my efforts with white glue and tissue to pay off. Either the tissue has too much "texture", or it disintegrates after while working it. In fact, I'm planning to try a few more today. I've also been studying how you portray the straps attaching the tarps and rolls; nicely done too!

Thanks for sharing this one with us! It's inspiring to me John! 🍻

  9. This is really really well done. If I build a tank I hope it turns out half as nice as this one

  10. Great modeling, as usual @j-healy.

  11. Very nice work and a great result with this, @j-healy.

You hit a home run here with this one ! It looks excellent. Trust me on this, I served as a "tanker" in M-60's and M1-A1's.
I'm happy to see you finished her up. These Tamiya kits (even the older ones) build into some nice looking models as you have shown us here. Adding the rolled tarps and replacing the grenade dischargers were big improvements.

I hope there's still enough time left to get a model finished as a tribute for my Dad who served in Infantry and Armor while in Korea during the War. I have a M-26 and an "Easy 8" Sherman underway, and these two would work. I hope mine turns out half as nice as yours has.

I definitely pressed the "Like" button.

Thanks for participating in our group. Two thumbs up !

  13. very nice work and weathering!
