Airfix 1/72 H81-A2/P-40B
Here is Airfix's 1/72nd scale Flying Tigers Curtiss H81-A2 (P-40B) . I really like Airfix's newer 1/72nd scale kits. Some modelers complain about the heavy pannel lines but once the kit is premed and painted they really get toned down to a reasonable level.
The kit is built stright out of the box and is a simple stright forward build with good fit and nice detail and lowered or in flight landing gear options. Personally I like to build most of my 1/72nd scale kits wheels up. The pilot figure included in the kit, (and is a must for an in flight aircraft) is pretty nicely done for such a small scale.
The base is an old wooden coaster with a printed out Flying Tigers logo printed from off line and covered with a disk of clear plastic cut from the clam shell package from some baked good.
As my S.O.P. the kit was finished in Vallejo and Tamiya paints with some oils for the weathering.
All in all, this is a really nice little kit as are most of the new Airfix releases. I highly recommend it, especially if you're a P-40 nut like I am. I have the Pearl Harbor defender version on the shelf waiting for it's turn on the bench, and I'm sure I'll be picking up another one or two when I run across them.
Hope everyone enjoys taking a look.
Nice build. I’m a fan of the newer Airfix kits too.
Definitely. I have a bunch of vintage Airfix 1/72nd scale kits in my stash that an older buddy of mine gave me and the difference in quality is like night and day. But I'll still build those old ones too. 😉
Excellent build, Clint! I am a big fan of the new Airfix as well.
Thanks, there definitely nice, especially for the money.
Really nice weathering work on small scale!
Thank you, I appreciate it. I'm pretty happy with how this one turned out.
That's a really nice P40, Clint @curtisshawk
Airfix did some great engineering on their latest kits, they are indeed a pleasure to build.
Thanks. There '72nd scale Hurricane and Typhoon even have open gun bay options. Definitely well detailed kits compared to there old offerings.
Great looking build, Clint. These planes are so cool when they're shown "in flight".
Thanks John, I completely agree, and no other plane looks as cool with a sharks mouth on it.
Looks great, nice work, I've done their 1/72 Wildcat [Malard] and Spitfire Mk 22 and both were a pleasure to build.
Thank you very much. I have the Wildcat too, and the Mk.1a Spitfire they put out
I can't wait to get to them eventually.
Having been brought up on 1/72 Airfix kits it’s always nice to see one of the latest that’s been finished as well as this one.
Thanks, it's a lot easier with the new Airfix kits, their so much better than the ones from when we were kids. If you haven't already built one, check them out, you won't be disappointed.
A great-looking P-40! Well done.
Thank you Greg. I appreciate the kind words.
