Tamiya 1/48 A-1J Skyraider.

November 22, 2023 · in Aviation · · 24 · 530

Camo colors from Model Master and Testors enamels, Black underside coat with acrylics. Cockpit, propeller and decals from Meteor Productions and Cutting Edge (OOP). Big rocket pods and submunition dispensers from Eduard, Small rocket pods from Arma Hobby. Minigun pod from Aerobonus. Gun cannons from Master. Small details on the landing gear wells from ResKit, plackard decals from Mike Grant´s and lamp bases from Eduard. Some other scratchbuilt improvements on my own and the weathering was done with AK Interactive water color pencils and its chipping medium for the black coat and the exposed metal on the cowl sides and wing tops. Actually this was an A-1H aircraft but I used the J kit. I chose to depict this lady after a mission with all the stores empty and the underside coat kind of very battered, maybe close to be removed to go back to daylight missions. I hope you like it.

  1. Looks fantastic, Ruben! Love the painting and weathering!
    Well done!

  2. Awesome skyrader Ruben. I like the helmet hanging outside of the cockpit, nice detail. I also like that you portrayed it just after a mission, very cool. Most guys wouldn't do that.

  3. Wow, that’s a fully loaded Skyraider model, great job.

  4. Excellent build. Those closeup photos really highlight your careful use of chipping and weathering. (@rubentorres)

  5. Awesome build, Ruben @rubentorres

  6. Beauty. Hard to beat a Spad.

    Well done👍

  7. Great build of one of my favourite aircraft.
Just a quick observation if I may. The USAF normally carried the smaller AERO 1C 150- Gallon External tank on that starboard wing.

    • Thank you for the note. I used the tanks on the kit, I think I oversaw that detail.

      • I brought this to ZM attention when they were planning on releasing the USAF version of the Spad. I left this station empty hoping to find an aftermarket tank, but no luck. I have, however, found this drawing and will try to have it printed.

Something about the prop just seems off to me. Probably old age...
