Mauve 1/48 P-40N
After a six month absence I've returned and finished this P-40N that I started in March 2024. Took me awhile to get back at modeling after losing my wife of 54 years to a sudden illness in April. She was my best supporter of this little hobby of mine and always thought each completed model looked great. Didn't matter that some were quite mediocre.
This P-40N represents a machine that flew with the 120th Squadron which was a joint unit of the RAAF. The pilots were Dutch and the the ground crews were Australian and they were initially deployed to Merauke on the coast of New Guinea in 1944. There was not a lot of air activity in the area at that time so much of their missions were of a ground attack nature.
I used Tamiya Dark Green over dark Sea Grey which may not be totally correct. In the cockpit I added an Untracast seat with belts and a Yalu IP. To open the canopy I used a Squadron replacement. A PittPen was used to outline some panel lines and Nylon thread for the antenna wire. I noticed that a rear gear door is now missing so it must be in maintenance for repair.
Not a winner by any means but it's finally done and she would have liked it.

This is a first seeing a P-40 in this scheme. I can imagine the variety of the Curtiss Warhawk you have sitting on shelves at home. Must be quite a sight. The P-40 is great.
After the fall of the Dutch East Indies, the remnants of the Royal Netherlands East Indies Army Air Force made their way to Australia.
That is how the RAAF acquired and operated 6 Do 24k flying boats.
I know the Dutch flew B-25s alongside the RAAF with the tricolour but haven’t come across the P-40 before.
