Originally from North Lincolnshire UK, I’m now an aussie citizen living near Melbourne Australia. I emigrated to Australia in 2006 at the age of 30. This was a massive move for my wife, myself and our 2 babies, as we moved to Oz without any prior visits! But we made it work and we have never looked back. Today, we now have 4 children.
Returning after 30 years or so to my childhood hobby of aircraft modelling, my main passion is for British RAF fighter and bomber aircraft. However, I am also drawn to complementing my WW2 fighters with their Luftwaffe counterparts.
As a young teen, I focused on many different 1/72 scale Airfix kits, ranging from RAF Spits, Lancaster, Mosquito, Tornado GR1 and F3, Jaguar, English Electric Lightning, Hawker Hunter, Red Arrows BAE Hawk (RAF display team) Harrier GR3, Westland Sea King (RAF Rescue like the one Prince William used to fly).
So, I did gain some valuable experience back then, I used way too much cement and painted the models with brushes. I don't think the extra thin cement was around then. The models looked good to me at the time, until I discovered some very professional models that I saw on display at an airshow at RAF Finningley in the UK when I was a young teen. RAF Finningley sadly was one of many RAF bases that were later closed due to defense cutbacks. This expo at RAF Finningley was where I discovered air brushing, and I realised that may pocket money fell short of affording such equipment. And so, the passion for building models kind of fizzled away.
But now, after receiving a Tamiya 1/48 Spitfire MkVB as a birthday gift, I was thrown back into modelling and with that, decided to buy myself an air brush and watched loads of hours of YouTube videos of various aircraft modelers, learning techniques that were so new to me, it was like starting again. I wonder if any of those modellers are on here?
I know they're not the best, but for now my preference is towards Tamiya kits in 1/48. The kits just seem to go together well. Maybe in time I'll need the challenge of making a bad kit work ha ha, or even opt for aftermarket detail up parts. My focus is for RAF and RAAF aircraft. I have my favourites also, which RAF and RAAF don't use, such as F-15's, F-14's and F-16's. These will eventually find a place in my growing collection too.
