Airfix’s BIG Typhoon

January 20, 2019 · in Aviation · · 13 · 2K

Just added the finishing touches to 's 1/24th MkIb this week: a project I've had on the bench for the last six months or so. Admittedly I've picked it up and put it down as and when I've felt like it, but regardless this kit is most definitely a long-term investment in regard to time and effort.

I found it an absolute joy to build and thoroughly enjoyed every minute. Fit was exceptional but you must follow the instructions to the letter, especially where the engine and its piping is concerned, as tolerances are very tight. The only after-market was a set of Eduard seat belts - everything else was OOB.

I opted for the post-war scheme so other than some tonal variation to the paint, I kept the weathering restrained. Paints were Xtracolour enamels with Humbrol flat as a top coat. Decals were from the kit and were excellent, bedding down well over the recessed/raised details without any problems. All in all, a fantastic kit - roll on the big Hellcat!

Best regards,
Tom

  1. What a monster! A beautiful monster, but definitely a monster.

  2. Very nice build of this brute.

  3. Looks like a vey solid build, nicely painted and full of details. Those big kits are wonderful, if only I had the space

  4. It totally works. I like the little ware and tear on the spinner in front of prop and the exhaust stains are nice touch. Its down and dirty with all of the cowling pieces removed and the ammo bins left open. Interesting to look at.
There is only one Tiffy left with another group that is trying to restore or resurrect another air frame. Which includes the cockpit and the aft fuselage. This is a box top model. One of those models that are done to show what goodies are inside. Airfix would be proud to see this one.

    Two thumbs up.

  5. Three thumbs up, if I had them.

  6. Nicely done...so - just what IS the wingspan of this behemoth?

  7. Really outstanding, Thomas!
