Tamiya 1/72 F4U-1D Corsair

January 24, 2022 · in Aviation · · 17 · 1.5K

Hello iModeler!

It's been a while... I hope all is well with each and every one of you.

Today, I want to show you this F4U-1D . This kit, in case you arent aware of the Tamiya Corsairs, is another benchmark kit. Fit was perfect, detail is great, and the overall build can be described as a pleasant experience. But this kit wasnt built as a display peice for myself, which is why my pictures arent super nice.

This corsair was a gift for my mother. Over the years, she has had to move around a lot. For work, her kids, family... etc. And because of that, she has slowly lost items of self importance. These include many handmade items from my sister and I when we were young. So when the opportunity arose to make her something, I took it.

She gave me this kit in hopes that I'd build it for her so she could take it to work. She didnt expect anything nice, she just wanted something hand made by me. She chose the Corsair because she knew it was my favorite aircraft, and as such, had more of an emotional connection for her. She didnt expect me to get it done quickly, or expect me to do anything nice with it. She thought I'd build it, throw some paint, and call it a day. She just wanted it to sit on her desk, after all.

These images dont do justice to the pre and post shading I put on it. This is mostly due to the poor lighting set up I have in my room. But, I applied pre and post shading, a tri tone camo (instead of pure blue), and even did some oil streaking (again, not especially visible due to my lighting). She was over the moon with it, and it felt nice to give her something she can look at every day, and say "Yep. My son built that for me."

Anyway, thank you for reading. I hope you all have had good modelling experiences recently, and I look forward to seeing what else comes up here.

See you on the next one.
