1/48 AMT P-40M

March 26, 2023 · in Aviation · · 21 · 509

Most recent off the bench is this old AMT kit. Not really sure they ever offered a M model, but some of their P-40 kits included a fuselage for an E as well as one for the N. The N model had the fuselage extended by 13 inches. Use the N fuselage, plus the E parts and presto change-o you have a P-40M for the most part. I have an excessive love of this old war bird so adding this RAAF P-40 to my collection was fun. The above subject represents a P-40M flown by Sqdn/Ldr Stan Galton, 88 Squadron based on Holland New Guinea, April 1944. This A/C was named for his wife Jen.

Not a wiz kit by any standard, the old AMT series of P-40's, can with a little work, be made into a decent looking P-40. For this kit I added an Ultracast seat with hardness, flared exhause stacks, and wheels to improve her looks. Paints used was Sky Grey, Dark Earth, and RAF Dark Green 2. Cockpit was mostly Model Master interior green and black. Decals were a combination of Tally Ho III Part One and spares from other P-40 builds. Antenna wire is nylon thread, exhause stain is pastel chalk, with some weathering was done by a brown PittPen. This will be number 25 in my collection of P-40's with a Parrot Head P-40N hopefully completed sooner than later.

I agree with you that the P40 was one of the nicest aircraft at thge beginning of the war.
Your build is clearly showing that.

  9. Gorgeous work Tom, I really like the weathering in this. Nothing wrong with another P-40! 🙂

  10. Nice work, Tom. Great mix and match. We usually see “E”s and “N”s modeled in Australian colors.

  11. Wonderful job Tom. The AMTs aren’t high tech but they look every bit the part when they’re done this well. It’s been a while (years in fact) but combining all the different releases of the AMT P-40 family, mix and matched could get you to all the versions. Congrats on an excellent model.

  12. Not the greatest kit as others have noted, but a very worthwhile model when not-great kit is combined with modeling talent. Looks good, "other Tom"!

  13. Just shows what can be done with one of these kits.

  14. 25, Tom! Surely that demands a picture! Beautifully done and congratulations on a magnificent quarter century. What a wonderful way to hit that landmark.

  15. I knew you had shown a bunch of P-40s, but 25?! I have quite a few in my stash because she's one of my favorite airframes as well, but I don't think I'll ever catch up to you! This is another nice one. Well done!
