Accurate Miniatures, 1:48 Scale, North American P-51C, "Mustang"
Pulling this one from the "Way Back Machine" for "Throw Back Thursday".
Sans Tennessee Tuxedo and Chumley, of course...
Anyway, I was in my 'Laboratory' organizing storage when I happened to see this old kit and decided to clean her up and move her into the main display case.
This is an old build, like when this kit was first released kind of old. Suffice to say, it was from the original run, built right out of the box and I used the kit's decals as well. I remember it being a pleasant build without a lot of sanding and re-sanding to get things looking right. This is also one of my first attempts at a natural metal finish. I thing it was a Testor's rattle can for the base coat, with Metalizer non buffing paints for the high lighted panels. The clear coats of both gloss and flat give the model a very oxidized and weathered appearance, which is what I wanted.
Markings are those of a P-51 from the 528th Fighter Squadron, 311th Fighter Group, 14th Army Air Force, based at Chengtu Airfield, China, during July, 1945. Number 1079, “Penny” was flown by Lt. Lester Arasmith who was credited with the destruction of six enemy aircraft in the air and a further five on the ground.
I hope y'all enjoyed this trip down memory lane as much as I did!
An amazing build of the good AM kit my friend Frederick! Your NMF looks very realistic - "Phineas J. Whoopee, you're the greatest!" - Tennessee
I see I’m not the only one watching TV on Saturday or Sunday mornings!
Thanks, Spiros
This razorback Mustang looks really nice, Frederick @fjs3
The various shading of the panels looks great.
Thank you, John
Nice work, Frederick. That’s a really appealing subject.
Thanks, John.
I went with the kits decals because it’s not the usual ETO schemes one normally sees.
Thats a winner! Great idea to clean it up and bring it out for display. NMF looks great and the markings you went with are attractive as well. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks, Dave!
I'm a fan of Razorbacks! Thanks for bringing it out of the closet to share!
Thanks, Greg! Hope all is well with you and yours.
That's a fine build. Looks familiar - I built "Penny" from that AM kit many years ago.
Thank you, Chas.
Love that metal finish. Awesome job!
Thank you, Alfred.
Frederick J Seitz III (@fjs3)
This is a classic one for sure. It looks REALLY good and I'm glad you decided to dust it off and put it in the headlines. A Razor back with a bare metal finish. What's not to like ?
Ironically I have this exact same AM kit, (decals and all) in ye olde stash. Like you I bought it when it first came out. I also picked up on your Tennessee Tuxedo right away. There were other favorites from back then as well... "Heaven's to Merketroid's... exit stage left !" then toss in some Peabody and Sherman... Dudley Doright...Underdog...Geez I'm starting to feel my age now.
I definitely clicked on the "like" button. Thanks for sharing Penny with us. She's a beaut !
Time to get busy builder her then, Eh Louis? JK.
Well done Frederick, did the exact same kit several years ago and posted the result here. I also found it to be a nice kit, not a lot of parts, decent detail etc. The only issue for me was the coke bottle thick canopy. She looks good.
Thank you, Tom!
Nicely cleaned up, she deserves to be on display.
Yes she does! I have a couple more to clean up and put in. I’ll post more when I can. Thank you, George.
Great looking Mustang, Frederick (@fjs3). I still have a variety of AM Mustangs in the stash which I plan to build in the near future. Well done.
“One day, I’ll build all these models…”
Said every model builder on earth.
Thanks, George.
