'Spad Dad'

October 22, 2023 · in Aviation · · 18 · 475

A quick project, just less than a month from opening the box, but it did have the bench completely to itself. Biggest challenge was finding the Minigun pod in my huge stash of spare ‘dangly bits' that I've amassed over many year of plastic fettling. When I did I had to scratch the front cone from a lollipop stick and Miliput !.

Paint was a joy, I'm officially a lacquer convert & fanboy, yes I know it's smelly and dangerous, but the results are undeniable and as long as you take sensible precautions… First time using Iliad decals and they were fine, I didn't use the tail-stripes, preferring to simply paint/mask/repeat using the blue scalloped section of the decal as a template to make a mask. The ‘filth' is all W&N oils, but I went back to X19 ‘Smoke' for the exhaust plumes as on this machine it just looks better to my eye.

Very happy with the result. Please feel free to make any comments, ask any questions or post any crits. Cheers from NZ.

  1. Excellent looking SPAD. So dirty looking. It definitely looks the part.

  2. Beauty. Don't see many camouflage SkyRaiders built. The under-side weathering is spot on; at times these things were filthy

  3. Excellent work, Ian.

  4. According to Spad drivers I have known, this is almost filthy enough to be considered "safe to fly." 🙂

Very nice work and a great result.

  5. Great achievement, Ian @ij001
Especially the weathering on this aircraft looks very realistic.

  6. Excellent result Ian! Love the camo!

  7. Great job! I've always been amazed by how much ordnance the old Spad could carry. Very cool aircraft.

  8. Wow, love the weathering. Superb build.

  9. Nice one. The more you learn about the ADs the more respect you have for them. Radial engines usually throw oil overboard so the system is constantly being replenished. Our Beaver used stuff like bloody syrup and it stuck like s**t to a blanket. These things in the J variant were hauling as much as a B17...😳. Cracking model.

  10. PS, regarding lacquer.

No paint in aerosol form is safe to breath in. The results are pretty much the same once the stuff gets in your lungs. I use lacquer and the standard acrylics but to be honest lacquer is just so much easier to use (as long as you use retardant) and often means you don't have to be over protective when weathering. I built an extraction booth which is very effective but still wear a mask, and often bug out after a major session. I tend to brush the non lacquer acrylics to be fair. To be honest basic precautions are worth the results. I have only been back modelling since lockdown and the possibilities now😳😎. Here's my Spad...I missed some things and over did the prop damage...

  11. A great-looking Spad! Well done.

  12. Looks like a hard working Warbird - excellent!

  13. Awesome looking Sky Raider!

  14. Well done, Ian (@ij001). Really nice job on the Spad. Your "mask and paint" tail came out nicely. I have toyed with the idea of using lacquers, but I really like the ease of cleaning my airbrush after using acrylics. I always approach my spares box with a lot of caution. I am never really sure what might be living in there.

    • George, ahead of building this, I spent three hours sorting my 1:48 weaps, drop tanks etc. Not brave enough to approach my 1:72 yet !

  15. Thanks everyone, as ever, really appreciate all the comments.

  16. Excellent paintwork and weathering, Ian.

Someday I need to build one of these, since I really do like "filthy planes" 😉
