Oblt. Armin Faber's Fw190 A-3

February 28, 2024 · in Aviation · · 21 · 342

On the evening of June 23rd 1942 Oblt. Faber landed on an airfield he thought was in western France. It turned out he was landing at RAF Pembrey in Wales, thus presenting the RAF with a perfectly intact 190. After testing Faber's plane the RAF confirmed what they suspected that the Mk.V was completely outclassed in all areas of performance except in turns. The need for an improved Spitfire brought about the introduction of the Spitfire Mk. IX which was a Spitfire V airframe using a Merlin 61 engine of 1565 hp. Although it was a stopgap measure, the Spitfire IX turned out to be one of the best variants of the Spitfire family.

This is the kit from a "Royal Class" boxing I bought some years back. The only additions to the kit were brake lines using lead wire, electrical wires to the landing gear retraction mechanism and the tail wheel retraction cable to the starboard one. Landing gear position indicators and the inside cockpit pully wire were made from stretched sprue. the Eduard instructions would have one paint the upper surfaces RLM 74/75. This is incorrect as evidence shows Faber's plane had 71/02 upper surfaces. I used a combination of water based paints from Xtracrylix, Pollyscale, Vallejo and Color of Eagles.

  1. Solid work, Dale. Good you got the colors right - the first 450 A-3s still used the 71/02/65 camo.

  2. Looks excellent, Dale!

  3. Great looking 190 Dale, sounds like the nazis needed some geography lessons.

  4. Quite an unintentional gift from Oblt. Faber, I'm sure it was appreciated.
Great looking Wurger Bird, Dale. Impressive work.

  5. Nice work, Dale. Is that the original Eduard 190 kit or the retooled one?

  6. Well done Dale, I guess Faber could be labeled as the new and improved Wrong Way Corrigan. Nice looking Butcher Bird Dale.

  7. Excellent Würger, Dale @dtravis
The camouflage scheme is beautifully applied.

  8. Good one Dale @dtravis
The early marks 190s are good canvas for the interim period between the 02/71 move to the 74/75 greys daytime fighter scheme. So many possibilities using one of best kits from Eduard stable.
I’d say you can use both and no one can argue about it, right? Thumbs up!

  9. I really like the paintwork on this, especially the subtle mottling! Well done.

  10. Beautiful FW-190 Dale!

  11. Very nice Dale. I'm using Hasegawa's kit to build the captured version of this aircraft
