Invasion Stripes: Fl-19, P-47
This article is part of a series:
Hi All,
A contribution to the FL-19 mini group build...”Invasion Stripes”.
Republic P-47D, 42-26298, “I Wanted Wings” / “Button Nose”
56th FG, 62nd FS
Lt. Albert P. Knafelz from Horseheads, Ny
This was an enjoyable build with no major issues. Mostly built out of the box with added aftermarket items listed below.
I added wiring for the engine and cockpit using solder wire of various diameters, and modified the kit Oil cooler exhausts to include scratch built flaps.
One troublesome spot on the kit were the gun bay doors. They needed some work to fit flush with the wings.
To save time and effort I eliminated most of the internal kit parts ie; turbo-supercharger assembly and accessories behind the engine. Why add it if I'm not going to see it?
The Nose art, “Button Nose” and Tail Codes were decals.
The Insignia and Fuselage Codes were painted using masks I created with a Cricut cutter.
Thanks for stopping by. As always...KEEP IT FUN!

Very impressive build Gary. The camouflage and painted over stripes are very well executed. Did you mix your own dark dull green for the cockpit? I must have four bottles attempting a satisfactory cockpit green. Yours looks very much the part. I would be interested in knowing what you used.
@russjurco)
Thanks, Russell. Glad you like it.
Sure thing. I wasn't about to spend hours and hours figuring out which green to use so I used what I thought was close enough: Mr Hobby H302 USAF Green. After drying, weathered with burnt umber oil wash and lightly rubbed with Tamiya metal pastels (if that's what they are called)
Thanks for the color callout. And pastels is what I call them though I always wonder if I should call them something else when I refer to them.

As usual, you have done an amazing job ! I'm definitely clicking on a few of the buttons... not button nose of course. The "like" buttons. 😉
Thanks, Louis!
Another beauty Gary. I have the decals to do this in 1/72 - love the scheme, and you executed it so well.
Thanks, Greg. It's a "fun" scheme!
Another beauty in your collection, Gary @gwskat
This is a very interesting camouflage scheme which is beautifully applied.
Thanks again, John. this was a fun scheme to do but a lot of masking, especially in 1/32. @johnb
Impressive build, Gary! Love the chosen camo, perfectly replicated!
Well done!
Thanks, Spiros
Beautiful work, I like it very much.
Thank you, Milan
An absolute cracker, Gary. I’m very much taken by the scheme. Your painting is always on the money and the finish you achieve is second to none. In this case the camo and the blocked out sections of the wing in green bring something a little different. Set off by the perfectly
toned down red and yellow and it has become something really superb.
As for the group - you lived up to your word - keeping it fun!
Thank you, Paul. It was a fun build and all the builds were spot on.
