ProModeler Monogram 1/48 P-38F

July 14, 2024 · in Aviation · · 18 · 432

A re-boxing of the venerable Hasegawa kit featuring new decals for the early types. The model represents a veteran aircraft with a high mission score that belonged to the 27th FS of the 1st FG when based in Tunisia during 1943.

Although the Hasegawa kit suffers from fit issues particularly around engine nacelles and tricky tail boom alignment, it builds to a very good representation of the P-38.

  1. What a wonderful result, Rafi!
    Well done!

  2. Nice work on a tricky kit. Great result.

Not sure about the sub-type ID. Early P-38Fs are almost indistinguishable from the P-3E - side opening canopy lid, fairings over the turbo exhaust etc., Major vote for it as an early P-38F because when I was researching the new book, Turning the Tide, I came across a statement in the definitive history of the 1st FG (which included 27th FS) that the group was completely equipped with P-38Fs by mid-May 1942 when they received orders to prepare for overseas movement to Britain. IIRC, the leftover P-38Es turned in by the 1st FG were the airplanes sent to Alaska in the summer of 1942 after the Japanese invasion of the Aleutians.

    • Thank you Tom.
I also thought that this was a 38F, yet I took for granted the description in the instructions sheet. Now that you mentioned, I checked with Osprey's P 38 in Europe and the Mediterranean. Although the particular aircraft is not shown, it looks like you are right in that the 1st FG received 38F and onwards.

  3. A lovely Lightning! Well done.

  4. Well done, nice finish.

  5. Great work on this Lightning, Rafi @blackmopane
Those red spinners are a nice accent.

  6. Look awesome! I really love the early model P-38s, or just about all the early models of WW2 fighters.

  7. Great looking P-38 ! I’ve got one of these to build, someday. If I do build it I hope it’s as nice as yours. What paints did you use? The shade of green and gray you used look perfect.
