P-8A Poseidon, 11 Squadron RAAF

1/72 Welsh Models P-8A Poseidon in the markings of A47-007 of 11SQN, RAAF complete. The build consisted of scratch building the weapons bay, weapons mounting points on the wings and pylons, many of the ESM and AMS lumps and antennas. I also added various vent blow in doors and the sonobuoy tubes. I reshaped a lot of the kit supplied parts as well. Finally I added AGM-84 Harpoons from a Hasegawa weapons set and Mk48 Torpedoes from a Hasegawa P-3C Orion, they looked close enough to me to replicate the Mk54s the P-8 carries. Decals were from a custom sheet DekLs created by upsizing their 1/200 sheet and it was painted in mainly SMS lacquers. It is a bit rough in some parts but I have spent enough time on it and am calling it finished.

  1. Beautiful build. First I have seen in Aussie markings in this scale.

  2. Looks massive. Good job on all detailing. All bumps, antennas and weapons bay gives a bit of interest to a fairly sleek aircraft.

  3. This is an amazing result of a seemingly VERY difficult kit, Ray.
    Congratulations!

  4. Excellent work, looks great on the stand.

  5. That’s really impressive, Ray! Well done. I wish someone would do a kit of this plane in 1/144.

  6. Great result of a not so often seen model, Ray.
    Well done.

  7. That thing is huge !
Looks excellent now you just have to build on an extension to the house to fit it in.

    • Thanks Brian, it will go with my other larger models on this shelf 🙂

  8. Awesome work! Excellent! Thanks for sharing. As I am working on a P-3 at the moment (a long moment) I am also very interested to build a P-8- as it is the P-3 replacement, and I have been able to see one in person at Cecil Field a few years ago. I am really interested in this kit.

    • Thanks Dan, I have been inside the RAAF P-8s a couple of times now, my son works on the P-3s and his old squadron converted to them a couple of years ago. I got a picture of the P-8 I have modelled on one of the open days and then there is a picture of my model next to a RAAF TAP-3B.

  9. Thanks for all the kind words everyone, much appreciated.

  10. Very nicely done Ray, looks lovely, well detailed.

  11. Really impressive, Ray, especially in 1/72, it must weigh quite a bit. Definitely liked.

  12. Lovely job on a challenging kit, Ray – the additional work you’ve done on this makes this very interesting on the eye.

  13. Hello Ray,
Reading your comments on the overal build:
    “Master Modeler and museum quality.”
I hope one of these days, it will be on the market by Revell or Airfix.
    Regards, Dirk / The Netherlands.
