Film Star !, part 2. 'Battle of Britain' movie Spitfire Mk IX (dressed up as a Mk 1)

September 25, 2022 · in Aviation · · 10 · 1.3K

This is the next completion in my "Battle of Britain" movie builds, the IXc, modified into Spitfire Mk IXc, MK297 that was the aircraft marked as AI*A, flown by Squadron leader 'Skipper' {Robert Shaw} in the 'taka taka taka' scene. It was built at Castle Bromwich in late 1943. MK297 had also appeared in the film 'The longest day', and the series 'A piece of cake'. It made its way eventually to Hamilton, Ontario, only to be destroyed in the same hangar fire as G-AWLW (Diemert Hurricane).

thanks for looking,
Colin

  1. Amazing job, as usual, Colin!

  2. It looks great ! I just watched that movie a few days ago.

  3. Takatakataka..."Don't be wet, we've only just come down..." LOVE that film.
Oh and an outstanding Spitfire model too.

  4. Very nice result @tail-dragon. The ICM kit is easy to screw up given some of the kit design mistakes made (I've fought a couple of these to a draw), so the result is even more impressive since a very large bit of "some modeling skill required" was in fact required.

    • Thanks! Other than the horrendous sink marks on some of the early pressings of the kit, probably the most inaccurate piece was the overly long, badly raked gear legs (and maybe the square control spade grip). While it would never be confused with an Eduard kit, it's nice enough with a little work.

  5. Turned out very nicely, Colin, good photographs as well.

  6. Lovely Spit, Colin!

  7. Always nice to see a Spitfire, Colin.
I remember that movie and also remember watching it with a couple of my brothers. I’m quite confident that Skipper would give it a thumbs up 👍
