Airfix 1/48 P-51D "Jersey J**k"

December 26, 2023 · in Aviation · · 30 · 422

My first post in a few months- wanted to get one posted before 2023 ran out.

kit, finished with Vallejo acrylics, oil washes, and Tamiya weathering powders.

A few self inflicted errors along the way but overall it was a smooth build. I really like these Airfix mustangs and in my opinion for the price/value they can't be beat.
I have one more Airfix pony in the works (F-51) which I hope to complete soon.

I appreciate all the fun we have on this forum, encouraging comments, information from people far more knowledgeable than myself, and most of all the amazing work that gets shared every day that inspires me to improve my skills.

Happy new year! God bless you all in 2024 🙂

  1. Very nice build, David.

  2. Great looking Stang, David! The nmf is beautiful. How did you do that pattern on the nose?

    • Thanks @fxrob !
The nose pattern is one large kit-supplied decal (with 2 smaller ones for the underside) Application went pretty smoothly except for a few rogue diamonds which decided to break off that had the be applied individually

  3. Nothing like a beat-the-clock deadline to get things done, David @dbutlr. Your pony looks mighty fine. Those Airfix stangs are darned good for the money don’t you think?

    • absolutely @eb801 for the money they can't be beat. This was number 3 (or is it 4) for me and I have another one 75% complete on the bench at the moment. Good fit, great detail, excellent oob decals- these kits are a winner in my book

  4. Nice pony David, as you stated those Airfix stangs are really nice kits for the price. And not as fiddly as the Eduard offerings. Keep up the good work.

  5. That turned out really nice David!

  6. Nice work, David. How did the decals perform? I have that kit and want to do the CBI “Little Indian” option.

    • @j-healy the decals performed well, the only difficulty I had was with the very large decal that made up the nose diamonds- a few on the diamonds broke off during application but I was easily able to get them back into place. That was the only decal I had any trouble with, the rest were perfect. I will have to get around to doing the "Little Indian" version myself- those rockets look menacing!

  7. Was the nose cone a decal too?

  8. Very nice work and a solid result, David.

One minor point for future 8th AF Mustang usage: the 108 gal tanks were made of pressed paper, and the silver paint used on them was not shiny. Very dull. Minor but it's the little things that add up to the Big Things.

  9. Nicely built Mustang! Great build. I've really been liking the newer Airfix kits but I haven't picked up one of the Mustangs yet. The Vallejo silver really looks nice, I just got the airframe set for Christmas from my wife, maybe one of these kits would be good to try it out on. I've never used there silver metallics yet so I'm anxious to try them out on something.

  10. Excellent result as always, David! Wishing to You and Yours a Great, Prosperous 2024!

  11. Great job on a really difficult paint scheme, David (@dbutlr). Well done.

  12. Very good looking Mustang, David @dbutlr
One large decal for the nose art is likely not easy to apply but you did really great.
I agree that those Airfix Mustangs are a pleasure to build.
Happy New Year to you as well.

  13. It’s always a pleasure to see a nicely turned out Airfix kit, this one is great.

  14. Nice looking 'Stang, David! Your paint job, panel lines and decals look awesome. I have a P-51 on the shelf, looking forward to starting it. But it's these posts that give me the motivation, thanks for sharing!

Awesome job, thanks for sharing this beautiful warbird.

  16. Great looking Pony all the way around. Those checker boards are a real trying element but you nailed it.

Nice and very enjoyable to see this Mustang build David.
    Good work on the NMF.

  20. Thats a great looking Mustang, always loved that scheme. A friend of mine owns a Stearman that Don trained in...had him sign one of the inspection covers. His hangar is peppered with paintings and models of Jersey J**k. you've done her a real justice!
