Trumpeter 1/48 Whirlwind

September 13, 2024 · in Aviation · · 12 · 293

A sketchy design from yet, without fatal mistakes. Decals are glossy and brightly colored and need to mute down or be replaced. Nonetheless, the model can be turned around to decently represent a unique aircraft that had a brief service period with the RAF.

  1. Excellent result of a unique aircraft, Rafi @blackmopane
    Decals do look perfect now.

  2. Excellent result out of the Trumpeter kit, Rafi!

  3. Looks terrific despite this kit getting dissed a lot, Raffi. What makes this Whirlwind so sketchy?

    • Thank you Eric.
Here is a list of flaws in a review I found. Some I managed to fix.
Incorrect panel line on rear nacelle where aft section rotates to accommodate the deployment of the flaps.

Top section of the rudder depicted as panel line rather than section of rudder.

Slightly bulged profile of the windscreen from ahead.

Taper of front of nacelles a little shallow, or nacelles too short.

Wing fuel tanks should be raised all around with a bevelled edge due to addition of self-sealing layer top and bottom from early 1941, or flush before that date.

Roll-over diagonal brace missing from cockpit.

Curve on landing gear bay hinge-line absent.

No retractable foot-step on port side.

  4. Very nice Whirlwind, Rafi.
Great work getting this beauty done, I really like the look on the Whirlwind.

  5. I always like the Whirlwind - kinda sleek-looking with "Popeye" forearms! Nice rugged look you achieved on it.

    • Thank you Greg.

  6. Nice work, Rafi. Anyone unfamiliar with the Whirlwind would never know about the flaws you mentioned, you replicated the paint to match the photo very nicely.
