1/72 Fiat CR.42 Falco, VINTAGE Revell H-648
Another inspiration while reading R.S.Tucks biography, 'Fly for your Life', I did not know that the Regia Aeronautica sent aircraft to participate in the Battle of Britain. One learned fact the book does report was that the Fiat C.R.42 participated in a daylight raid of the Battle of Britain on November 11th, 1940 by escorting a dozen BR.20 Bombers. Interestingly, Wikipedia mentions that the CR.42 was the most numerous Italian aircraft to be used during the Second World War with over 1,800 CR.42s being constructed
The kit is the OLD Revell H-648 released in 1965, according to Scalemates. The kit was purchased from a LHS ‘preowned' kit pile after noticing I had some decals in my stash from the Pavla kit. The kit actually had the original “RCAF 4 Wing” price tag of 30 cents. I considered the camo scheme as a challenge and somewhat of an experiment. The kit has some nice ribbing and some fabric detailing. The missing cowling bumps were added by using blobs of cyan glue, not perfect but the effect was achieved.
After some trial paintwork on a Post It Note, I used Tamiya XF-59 Desert Yellow and XF-19 Sky Grey from the base colors and dabbed the camo spots using thinned down AK Real RC067 and Mr.Hobby RLM 82. The pattern turned out to be a bit tighter than it should be, but I was not going to start over again after noticing the issue. Tamiya XF-3 was used for the yellow cowling and spinner. Once all painted, trying to align the upper and lower wings nearly drove me crazy as the strut placement did not quite line up properly, but I finally got it together. Strut wiring was to be added, but I figured this kit was done.
Thanks for viewing.
What a wonderful result from the old but so sweet Revell kit, George!
Love it!
Thanks Spiros, that kit is one year younger than me.
Nice job on your CR 42! I love seeing the older kits made in today's world. The extra work put into this build made this a great looking CR 42.
Thanks Bob, I wanted to fool around the the camo scheme and was happy the way it looked.
A wonderful result, George @georgeswork
Especially this camouflage on such a tiny model. This usually is already a challenge on a 1/48 scale.
What exactly did you use to dab on this pattern.
Thanks John, I thinned down the the paints down to about 50/50 and dabbed with a '0' brush, had to do a double pass. The paints were just too thick without thinning, i had a very bumpy surface if i did not add a lot of thinner.
Very nice..
Those bi-plane kits can be a challenge to build. Yours turned out nice looking. The paint looks especially nice.
Nice paintwork on that little Falco!
Another great oldie, George!
Fine work, George. Very intricate camo painting on such a small model. You make that old kit look great.
Too tight or not, that camo pattern came out extraordinarily well! Great-looking model!
Well done, George. Especially on that camo...looks great
Nicely done George, biplanes are such fun !
