Stinson Reliant SR-9
This article is part of a series:
Hi All,
Adding to my Lycoming powered vehicle series with a Stinson Reliant SR-9, powered with a Lycoming R-680 radial.
Build:
This AMT kit is a 1970's era kit. The build was straight forward with no major problems. Along with normal seam filling and cleanup, some filling was required between the gear legs and spats.
Because the kit propeller somewhat looked like a propeller, I decided to scratch build a better representation from spare blades, from the extras box, styrene tube and sheet for the hub and counterweights. A new pitot tube was also scratch built.
I updated the interior, but this was a moot point with tinted windows and eventually deciding to close the doors. Oh well…I know it's there.
The majority of this build, by far, was paint scheme artwork, masking and painting.
My scheme is based on a “typical” Stinson gull wing scheme, but I tweaked it by adding the registration number to the fuselage sides, bigger cowl tulip, modified fuselage and spats lighting-bolts and removing the tail outline.
First up, overall aircraft was primed, followed with painting the entire aircraft white. Next, was the red, masking the white with self-created masks. After fixing some over spray and seepage under the masks I applied a clear gloss to prepare for decals. All portions of the red were outlined with black pin-striping using self-made decals. The Stinson tail emblems were from the kit. Lasty, a semi-gloss clear was applied overall.
The tinted windows were created by painting AK Real color, clear smoke to the interior of the clear parts prior to assembly.
This was a challenging but enjoyable project from concept to completion.
Thanks for stopping by, hope you like my Stinson Reliant SR-9.
Until next time…KEEP IT FUN!

Absolutely stunning, Gary!
The decals have worked really well, as has the painting. Nice tinting on the windows! Also great to see the Duesenberg in the picture too. Photography and setting great, too!
Thanks for the compliments, Paul. Much appreciated!
Gary, that is an incredibly attractive model plane photographed so well! 🤩 Man, you nailed it, my friend @gwskat! 🏆
Thank you, Gary.
Very nice work of an old kit Gary, @gwskat. I am impressed with your painting of the red with the black outline. Very impressive in getting the line so sharp and consistent through the entire paint scheme. Well done!
Thanks, Walt. Just to be clear the black outlines are decals I created to outline the red.
Terrific looking results on this classic model… looks beautiful!
Thanks, Jay
Wonderful build with outstanding finish. Special.
Thank you, Bob
Excellent Gary (@gwskat). I really wish we had more of these interwar civilian aircraft available to build. Very attractive aircraft and you've done an outstanding job on bringing that old kit up to snuff.
Thank you, Carl. Nice thing with non-military subjects is one can be more free to do different paint schemes.
Well done - nice car, too. I love old Stinsons and such.

Thanks, Chas.
Wow - that looks immaculate! Well done!
Thanks, Greg!
Great result - the cream finish really does set it off.
Thank you, Christopher. I was hoping for even more of a cream color but I'm pleased with the results.
Lovely job! it looks much better than the model that I built several months ago.
Thank you, John
Not at all familiar with this bird, but I know a great build when I see it. Wonderful work. Keep ‘em coming.
Thanks, Matt.
Looks great. Very well done. I have this one as well as the Beech Staggerwing in my stash. Inspiration to get building mine.
Thanks, Mike. The Staggerwing is another beautiful aircraft.
Excellent result, Gary! Loved all your extra job!
Thanks, my friend. Glad you like.
Really excellent work on this, Gary.
Thanks, Tom
An impressive build, Gary @gwskat
This is such a wonderful aircraft in an attractive scheme.
Well done.
Thank you, John
Well done Gary, I drive by the Redlands Municipal Airport every morning with all the civil aircraft parked very close to the street, as I drive by. Seeing your magnificent build of the Stinson reminds me that it would be nice to have at least one civil air plane on the shelf somewhere maybe 2. I think the last civil air model I built was the Gates Lear Jet kit from IMC in 48th scale. As a teen. A nice change of pace, always with the unique and impressive subject once again. Thanks for sharing
Thanks, Chuck. Thanks for watching the build. Yeah, sometimes you need to change up subjects to keep the mojo moving.
Love the colors on this one, Gary.
Thanks you, John
Really nice work, I love these old high-wing monoplanes from the '30s.
Thanks, Greg. They are classic.
She looks great, Gary @gwskat! It's really an elegant plane with a beautiful paint scheme. I like how you did the windows.
Thank you, Felix.
Outstanding work!
Thanks, Dale
All of the above, nicely done!
Thanks, Robert
