Curtiss-Wright, AT-9, Jeep

January 26, 2025 · in Aviation · · 36 · 149

Hi All,

Adding another Lycoming powered aircraft, the Curtiss Wright “Jeep”, to my Lycoming builds.

The AT-9 was a twin engine, advanced trainer, used to train those pilots moving from primary to multi-engine roles. The AT-9 was powered with two Lycoming R-680-9 radial engines. 792 were produced.

The kit was a decent build, with nice interior and exterior details, but can be more likened to a limited run kit. Care is needed during assembly to get proper fits but filling and sanding seams are still to be expected, especially with the nacelles and cowlings.. The kit decals were easy to use and applied without any issues. I used Micro-sol but was not a necessity, just a personal choice.

Thanks for looking.
KEEP IT FUN!

  1. Beautiful work!

  2. Nice build on that Jeep!

  3. Exceptionally well built Gary, especially cockpit.

  4. Fantastic build, and a great presentation. The aluminum skin looks great, as does the cockpit. PS: kudos to you for managing to get the push rods off the sprue and onto the model. 😉

  5. This turned out very nice. The photographs too.

  6. Beautiful job, Gary, on great little kit, and nice photos, too! Nice to see another trainer built.

  7. Some really good work done, Gary @gwskat
I definitely love the looks of this aircraft.

  8. Excellent build, Gary. The metallics are great. A very nice finish too - super smooth. I’ve been wondering if you polish or fine sand the paint finishes! Great work with the photos too. Well composed with the background. Outstanding!

    • Thanks, Mate! Glad you like it and finally get to see it...darn phones...LOL
Normally I do not "sand" the paint coats.
Unfortunately the upper primer was a bit rough but I decided to move forward. So the final finish should be smoother.

  9. Beautiful job on a great looking airplane.

  10. Well done work. NMF looks pretty good.

  11. Wow ! This looks amazing, both the model and the photos. I’m especially impressed by the one particular photo that has the port side door open and it allows you to see the cockpit details.

I think this picture is just like looking at a real plane if you could go back in time.

I have been thinking about grabbing one of these for my hometown heroes project where I am building aircraft that were flown in the Central Florida area during the war. Your plane was lost not too far away from us, near Tallahassee which is the State capitol. So it would be a good candidate for my project.

It’s really hard to pick out a favorite thing with this one. Each time I look at the pictures I see something new. The backgrounds and even the base are also commendable.

Well done my friend ! Very well done indeed.

I think you have just inspired me to grab one of these kits. Yours looks magnificent and I can only hope that mine will turn out half as nice as yours did.

I’m definitely going to be clicking on several of these kits various like buttons.

  12. Splendid work! Solid build, the best Jeep from Dora I’ve seen

  13. Very sharp, Gary.

  14. What a wonderful result, Gary!
    Congratulations!

  15. Gorgeous build of a gorgeous plane, Gary @gwskat. Love those US schemes from the 1930ies!

  16. What a cute little airplane, Gary.
