Airfix Supermarine Spitfire Vb 1/48

April 2, 2025 · in Aviation · · 24 · 184

This is the 2014 kit from Airfix. Not a bad kit but with some fit issues.

Everything that could go wrong, went wrong with this build. I had a set of Techmod decals depicting a Vb with the desert scheme without the Volkes filter. Very appealing with the red spinner (https://www.scalemates.com/kits/techmod-48029-supermarine-spitfire-mk-vb--210640), but the quality was terrible. They disintegrated and were brittle. So i had to strip the paint and decided to choose this scheme. It is a Vb restored at Duxford by the IWM, the markings are of 317 polish squadron.

Painted with AK Interactive acrylics, weathered with oil colors. Antenna wire done with AK super fine thread and a gigantic blob of super glue on the tail fin. Of course the canopy was damaged during the paint strip (Had to use one from the other Vb kit i have in my stash) and the seatbelts broke off and oh look Ma, there is no steering stick in the cockpit as it got lost somehow. Anyhows, i love the scheme.

Happy modelling!

  1. Felix, she is a beauty of a build, great job and nice save from the first paint scheme!

  2. Despite the difficulties & set backs , you produced a beautiful looking Spitfire, Felix @fxrob ! The paint and weathering are first class!

  3. Felix, that is a wonderful Spitfire! I remember the particular aircraft from the back cover of a Squadron: In Action edition on the Spitfire. If the missing control column begins to bother you, Barracuda Studios offers very nice items for both the cannon armed and .303 eight gun Spitfires.

  4. Felix, your not alone in removing control sticks.
That's one of my super powers. I can be removing a control stick from a sprue or glueing a fuselage together or look at the kit and come up short. If your not breaking something or missing something temporally your not modeling. Your Phoenix build has risen from the ashes and looks great.

    • Dear Stephen @stephen-w-towle
Your comments always make me smile - you are a true poet and an artist of words. So we share some super powers! I love your approach to modelling. You are right - keep it fun, stay positive. Thank you so much for your feedback!

  5. Nicely done Spit! Even looks good as a cake-topper on that pile of chocolate frosting... 🙂

    • Thanks, Greg @gkittinger, haha you got me - i couldn't hide my swiss roots and added some chocolate! Seriously, i want to add a little diorama to it but haven't gotten round to it.

  6. What a wonderful result after the paint stripping, Felix!
    Well done!

  7. G’day Felix (@fxrob),
    Great save.
    Liked!

  8. Weathering looks terrific. One would never know the troubles you had, your Spit looks so good, Felix @fxrob

  9. Nice one mate. The techmod decals can be challenging at times but then a recent experience with some from Airfix (cartograph) proved no better and just would not flex. Luck of the draw I guess.

  10. Great job, Felix

  11. Like my Sopwith Dolphin that will never have rudder pedals. Modeling is fun...
Very sweet paint job on this one. I mean REALLY good.

  12. Despite the challenges and setbacks you encountered the result is outstanding.
A beautiful Spitfire added to your collection.

  13. A great save on this Spitfire, Felix @fxrob
Your perseverence definitely won over the challenges you faced.
    Well done
