Airfix 1/48 Supermarine Walrus Mk.I
A kit I've been wanting to build for a long time now and when Airfix announced the reissue in January I had my preorder ready.
And what a kit. It just fits together. Even the canopy clicked into place.
There was barely any filler used, mainly some PPP to tidy up the fuselage to hull join.
Primed with Mr Finishing Surfacer 1500 Black,
Painted with Humbrol 78 Interior Green.
Colourcoats Dark Slate Grey and Extra Dark Sea Grey,
SMS RAAF Sky Blue
Tamiya Nato Black, Rubber Black, Dark Yellow, Light Gun Metal, Clear Red and Clear Green
Mr Hobby Super Metallic Dark Iron.
Xtreme Metals Steel.
Washes used included Flory Dark Dirt, Citadel Nuln Oil, Seraphim Sepia and Agrax Earthshade.
Some Yellow, Blue and White oil paints for a little variation in tone.
Finished with Windsor & Newton Galeria Matt Varnish with a couple of drops of Vallejo Model Air Sky Grey to fade it all back.
Rigged with Uschi Van Der Rosten Standard Line.
Since I have taken the pictures the wingtip lights have been painted.
What can I say this was a joy to build and has let me improve on the Matchbox one I butchered as a youngster.

I am currently rigging mine, Alistair @alistairfgauld. I was contemplating doing the RAAF version- and telling from your pictures that version looks great. Your build is amazing, beautiful paintjob and weathering! If mine turns out half as decent i‘ll be happy. Great job!

I was going for beaten up but not hammered.
Not certain I pulled it off completely but I'm happy with the end product.
I'm certain yours will be miles better than this.

One thing is for sure, your build is very beautiful.
How did you do the rigging so fast? I am using AK Interactive rigging which is apparently the same as Uschi's. Yet the long threads keep falling off. Do you glue them on sagging?

The rigging wasn't as much of an issue as I thought it would be.
I got the wings done in an afternoon.
Give it a go I think you'll enjoy it.
I was following along with this build on the other site - and it's a brilliant result! The rigging is the cherry on top, but the whole thing is elegantly done. I'm very impressed at your output and high quality outcomes.

It is a beautiful kit to put together and apart from the rigging it was OOB.
I didn't think it needed anything else.

The way I planned it each wing was only two long runs and one short one.
I think it worked out OK.

I fully agree with you about this Airfix kit, I build it myself recently and it does go together beautifully.
You definitely got a much better result out of it than what I achieved.

As you know the kit fits together so well that I was able to do all the work in sub-assemblies, paint, weather and give them a final coat them separately then get the rigging sorted out.
I would disagree that the result is better than yours though.

An Eastern Fleet Walrus! Fantastic result on this, Alistair. I did mine as the one aboard Victorious that did the rescue in Tokyo Bay I completely agree about the kit. It’s probably my second favorite model of all time after the Airfix Gannet.
