Speaking of the Academy Phantom

Here is the cockpit, not the greatest pictures, but you can see how I modified the left hand RIO pit to more closely resemble the real thing, the front pit is pretty close. One thing that I noted and corrected in the back, but not as much [...]

USS Wilkes DD441 Done!

Well here she is completed! Did not add every bit of PE, and since detail shots of Wilkes are hard to find I had to be creative and use other ships close to her configuration for things like the floater net baskets, but I am pretty happy [...]

And after a period of no production for moving... DD441 continues

So back in full swing on my Wilkes project and thought I would post an update, starting to add PE and all the little parts, I am especially happy with how my dual 40mm tubs turned out, scratchbuilt them from Dragon quad 40s and Gold Medal [...]

A quick pic for Craig in honor of his 46

Loved your Phrog Craig and so I cropped a picture I have of the cave to show the Julian Date Calendar I got when I was in HSC 21. It is from HC 11s Quality Assurance shop, and is in the shape of a 46. THEY WERE GOING TO THROW IT AWAY! I [...]

More work on the "Cave"

Small room, but feel blessed to have a space, not sure about the other walls, but these I like and I am just about ready to start gluing and painting again! Not sure where to hang my flight jacket, I still wear it out now and again. [...]

Lots of painting, lots more to go main colors are on for the Measure 22 scheme she wore from 44 (possibly late '43) on through the end of the war. Need to do lots of touch ups, the Italeri Acrylics I used for the light grey gave me fits, [...]

Not a build article, but a nostalgia picture

Wonder who may have built one of these in the past? I got one for a present as a kid when they were brand new and the hottest thing on the market. It was lost in one of my Navy moves years ago and I have wanted one ever since, so I [...]

Progress on The USS Wilkes DD 441

Continuing on my conversion of the Dragon 1/350th Livermore kit into the USS Wilkes as she probably (note I said probably!) looked during Operation Husky the invasion of Sicily. Modifications mostly consist of re working the rear gun tubs [...]

Inspiration for the next build

I had originally decided to build my Academy Phantom as a 1972 Sundowners bird, but then I ran across this picture. VF 84 USS Independence, 1965. It was Indy and 84s only Vietnam war cruise. Markings for the period were in a flux starting [...]
