1:48 Scale, Hobby Boss, F4F-3, “Yellow Wing”

While I'm waiting on “Wimpy” to dry, I started another project, and one I've always wanted to tackle.
A US Navy, “Yellow Wing”. I just think they are some of the most colorful aircraft that ever flew.

I'm using ' kit of the -3, (my favorite Cat). Although I don't feel it's as good as the Tamiya kit, it is close, and it is a -3, so no conversion therapy needed! YAY!

Here are some of the cockpit shots with their initial painting. Details to be added tonight, I hope, and then on to the wheel bay! Double YAY!

  1. That looks great, Frederick! I look forward to more. That kit has a lot of nice details. Adding your work to it really makes it real!

  2. Great pick, Frederick. FYI, yellow wing -3s were delivered with bronze green cockpits. Humbrol 75 is a good match.

    • Not every one of them, John. Some were in the Aluminum Lacquer, albeit most, as you have stated, were a Dull Dark Green. I'm going to stick with the aluminum, because it is so different than the usual. I'm sure researching the BuER number, may put this to rest.

  3. Looks good so far, my friend.

  4. Oops. F4F-3 was the first Grumman cat to have a bronze green interior. Hope you haven't gone too far to effect a "save."

    • Morning Tom.

Um, yeah, im a little beyond that now..?...
You’re not the only one who tried to correct me. I have a friend who worked in the Grumman History Office, who also got back to me, saying there were some -3’s with aluminum cockpits, but anything that went into fleet service, would have been painted BG.
Thank you for the heads up Tom. Now I have to figure a Battle plan of recovery!
