Tamiya 1/48 Brewster F2A-2 Buffalo

June 28, 2023 · in Aviation · · 30 · 464

Here is my completed entry for the Jim Sullivan Memorial Build.

This is Tamiya's 1974 boxing of their first release of the Brewster Buffalo, Kit No. 61019. There are 3 versions that can be made, RAF, Dutch and USN.

This is a nice kit, all of the parts fitted well, the canopy did have a few issues but other than that an enjoyable build.

I used the decals that came with this kit, they were at least 40 years old so I had a couple of issues to fix. They needed the sun, 8 days worth to bleach out the yellowing that had occurred over time. I also brushed on Microscale's "Micro Liquid Decal Film" to add some protection to the decals. When applied they worked out nicely.

On this build I used the markings for the U.S. Navy, Brewster F2A-2 (BuNo 1412) of fighter squadron VF-2.

My first Yellow Wings build. This was part of the "Flying Chiefs." USS Lexington 1941.

I want to thank Jay @ssgt on reminding of the Jim Sullivan Memorial Group Build. Jay got my wheels rolling into the right direction for this build.

  1. Love yellow wings. Hate yellow paint. Love it

  2. @v1pro - The finished piece turned out really well Bob. Yellow can definitely be a challenge to paint without needing a thousand coats.

  3. Well done, Bob.

  4. Turned out terrific Bob @v1pro. Those yellow wing Buffalos are sharp looking and you did a killer job. You nailed the paint.

  5. Great looking yellow winged aircraft.

  6. Bob @v1pro , your F2A turned out really nice looking, you’ve done excellent work on this Buffalo. The yellow, silver, and blue look great together. Also cool you were able to save and use the original kit decals… after market decals can cost almost as much as the kit.

  7. You definitely honored Jim with this beautiful Buffalo, Bob @v1pro
I like your chosen scheme and you applied it beautifully.

  8. An amazing result, Bob! Fantastic painting! A great honor to Jim!

  9. Super job on this Bob. Very colorful and well executed paint scheme

  10. Glad to see you got the Chrome Yellow color for the wings and the Lemon Yellow color for the tail right, Bob. This is an area where mistakes are commonly made by modelers.

The kit is close to 50 years old and still holds up. You did great with this.

    • Thank you Tom @tcinla. I took my time researching on the wing's and tail colors, I am pretty happy on the yellow I picked for the wings.

And I agree, this is a very nice kit from the 70's.

  11. Really nice work, Bob (@v1pro). Nothing looks better than a plane in the yellow wings scheme, and this one has certainly hit the mark. Well done.

  12. Nice work, Bob. I can never see too many Tamiya Buffaloes! That’s great you were able to use the kit decals. I built that scheme in 2008 and had to use Yellow Wings decals, which are great products.

  13. Good looking Buffalo! I think it's harder to pull off the pre-war schemes than a camo finish, and you pulled this off nicely!

  14. Very nice! I have a few Buffaloes, the yellow wings are my favorites. Like the man said, love yellow wings, hate yellow paint.

  15. Always a challenge yellow schemes Bob. You got it perfectly 👍
