1/48 F4F-1D Corsair Jim Sullivan Group Build

July 9, 2023 · in Aviation · · 16 · 247

I used the kit to represent an FG-1D flown by LTC Donald K. Yost of VMF-351 aboard the USS Cape Gloucester, July-August, 1945. It's my contribution to the Jim Sullivan Group Build initiated by Louis Gardner, so thanks Louis for the invite. Nice way to honor the recent passing of not only a fine modeler but quite the expert when it came to anything Corsair. Jim on several occasions really helped me find information concerning some of my builds. Never asked for anything in return, just great guy willing to share information.

No need to dwell on the Tamiya Corsair as much has been written about it's detail, overall fit of the parts, and accurate shape. Needless to say though it's a little long in the tooth, one came make a very nice finished model with it. The additions I added were a 3-D cockpit decal set, which I liked, plus an Ultracast seat and wheels. Paints were a combination of Tamiya and Model Master enamels and acrylics. The antenna wire is nylon thread and the insulator is small wire insulation from some de-carded electronics. Decals are from the Fundekals Corsair set, some of which I passed along to fellow iModelers for their builds.

All in all a fun build and a great way to honor the memory of the man I called Mr. Corsair. He'll be missed.

  6. Nice looking Marine Corsair. A pretty colorful one in the era of Glossy Sea Blue.

  7. Very nice results Tom! I've got this kit on the bench and while searching for interesting 1D marking, I have not yet come across anything this cool looking. The yellow and white looks great, and the build is clean!

  8. @tom-bebout - Fantastic build Tom!

  9. Well done, Tom (@tom-bebout). This is one of my favorite paint schemes for the Corsair. I got the Fundekals Corsair set so I could build this plane, as well as several others. They have some really fun paint schemes in their decal set. Great job on building the kit and adding some really great markings. Great looking interior.

  10. Nice work on this classic kit, Tom.

  12. Stunning result Tom- I knew that this scheme would look cool but seeing the pictures is even more impressive. This is an outstanding result- I am really impressed by the 3D detail in the cockpit along with the small details like the insulator which is an idea I am going to steal for my next build. Thanks for sharing your photos and those awesome decals!
