iModeler August Awards

September 13, 2017 · in News · · 20 · 2.2K

With 119 new articles and a record-breaking 2065 comments, August was a sweet month here at iModeler with an abundance of great modeling to behold. Continuing our tradition, here is our selection of models and articles that we think have especially contributed to making iModeler an outstanding modeling hangout.

We award one iModeler Best in Show title to the entry that wins this month's jury award, but also list runner-ups as Honorable Mentions. We think that all are great modeling accomplishments that deserve recognition. The judging committee was @editor, @raikisan, @halvarvonflake, @aisak, @magnusf and @rickard-malmborg. I'm personally very glad to be a part of such a competent panel because one person can't possibly grasp all the various qualities of modeling on display!

iModeler Best in Show - August 2017

The winner of this month's jury award is Andreas Fey and his Eduard FW-190 F8 1/72.

Some modelers build their models to celebrate engineering detail, some seek to document a bit of history. Some use them as part of a diorama setting to create a visual context, others see their models as as canvas for creative painting. By the look of Andreas Fey's photo sets, he seems to be building his models to put them in the photographs.

Creating a model that could be mistaken for a real object is a dream of any modeler, and we'd know that the smaller the scale, the harder this elusive task is to achieve. A combination of strong work in the modeling department, figure, diorama and photography skills contribute to the mesmerizing images that we've had a joy of viewing in many of Andreas' articles.

Considering this entry, we asked ouselves a question: is building and posing yor models for the photographs part of the modeling art? Following a route once set by Shepherd Paine and his diorama books we'd say the answer is yes. Maybe even more so in this age of digital media where the internet is everyone's favorite showcase. Andreas' photo style is personal, atmospheric and an invitation to the rest of us to be more creative about the way we photograph our models. Very, very smart.

But wait, there is more! – the Random Award

We are also awarding a prize as a token of appreciation to all our contributors. This is selected through an entirely random draw among all the entries of the month. Our distinguished winner this time is Jim Altergott and his Dragon 1/35th scale King Tiger Battle of the Bulge. This was Jim's first post at iModeler - a warm welcome onboard!
