Airfix 1/48 P-51D Mustang

Another one of my offerings in the Jerry Grandall Tribute Group here on iModeler as organized by Tom Cleaver. I never realized the amount and variety of decals that are offered by EagleCals. That is until I did a little research and then checked my stash. Needless to say there are plenty.

This is my first attempt at building the kit. It is better than the old series, and yes I realize they didn't do a D Model. It has more detail and assembly options than the P-51 kit and I can't compare it to the P-51 as I haven't built one yet. IMHO it is a nice kit, the price is right, because I got it at Hobby Lobby in their 40% coupons days. For me it was easy to assemble and the parts fit was very good, however, it's not a beginner kit. Furthermore, didn't need to use any putty which is always good.

Prior to painting she was sprayed with Grey Tamiya Fine Primer from a rattle can. Shows all those blemishes you need to correct. Top coat was Tamiya LP-70 Gloss Aluminum using an air brush. It is a lacquer based paint and since I have a paint booth not a lot of fumes are noted. I liked it as it sprayed and covered well. Because the finish is glossy I didn't use any Pledge/Future prior to applying the decals and they settled down quite well. Top coat is Alclad II Semi-Matt which is also a lacquer. Panel lines were accented with a PittPen plus a home brew wash applied with a fine point paint brush. No additional items were added so she's pretty much an OOB build.

The Jerry Grandall Group is a nice group and if you haven't joined I encourage you do do so.

Thanks for sharing your build progress.
I do agree that these Airfix Mustangs are a joy to build and do have some nice details.
Your work clearly shows that it can build into an amazing Mustang.

  3. Very nice, Tom @tom-bebout. That Airfix kit is really decent. You certainly did a fine job detailing the cockpit.
Now you have to try a Meng and Eduard P-51 next.

  4. Really nice build, Tom (@tom-bebout). The natural metal finish came out exceptionally well. Your homebrew wash seems to work very well.

  5. Nice to see a well built Airfix kit.

  6. I really really really like this one, @tom-bebout! Everything came out perfectly. You can safely list this in your Top Ten Ever. Really nice.

Particularly like you got the canopy "sit" - the bete-noir of many many P-51 modelers.

  7. Nice work, Tom!

  8. That is a beautiful build Tom, @tom-bebout. I love the cockpit, it turned out excellent. The silver finish turned out great, and somehow you managed to make the decal film just disappear, very nice! It also goes to show what you a talented modeler can produce out of the box!
